In a pilot project between RNIB and London Underground, we created and promoted innovative books of tactile and large print plans of three Tube stations to help blind and partially sighted passengers plan their journeys.
User requirements research and site visits were undertaken to develop consistent, accessible and usable plans from complicated engineering drawings. The final plans comprised creative presentations of complex 3-dimensional station environments with descriptions.
After staff training and promotion to the public, and a six-month trial, 41 people had used the plans. Evaluations involved short and long interviews exploring initial reactions and in-depth usage. The plans were highly valued, with passengers feeling more informed before travelling, and safer and more confident while travelling. The plans were highly commended in two UK transport awards, and will be implemented for further stations.
