Abstract:

TPB has been producing tactile picture books for children in Sweden since 1992. The library offers books that vary in complexity in both picture and story. Teachers at the Resource Centre Vision at the SPSM, with experience of using the tactile picture books for blind children, felt the need for a particularly simple picture book for small children that would function as a starting point for the children to develop their tactile graphic literacy. TPB and the Resource Centre began collaborating in developing such a book in 2005 and in 2007 the book “Badutflykten” (A day at the beach) was published. This book contains a simple story and the pictures can be interpreted by their texture and not by their shape.The book has been evaluated at the Resource Centre Vision.

• The presenters will focus on their cooperation, the book and the evaluation.

Outcomes for audience:

• Ideas and suggestions on how to introduce tactile pictures books to very small blind children.
