Hoëlle Corvest Morel is responsible for making the permanent and temporary exhibitions in the Museum of Science and Industries in Paris accessible for blind visitors. In cooperation with the Louvre (and other educational organizations), she has developed a course of 5 workshops of 2 days each for adult blind people to learn to read tactile diagrams. Most have never learnt to work with tactile diagrams before.
Starting with simple 2D diagrams, the participants are taken into perspective, art, the human body, the human body represented in art and even facial expressions. The course is vivid and interesting and uses replica's of statues and literature as well. It is wonderful to see most participants develop their skills amazingly. When they leave, they are able to perceive small and complex details and often have learnt very much about the 'sighted world', that was a closed book for them before the workshops.
Dorine in 't Veld was formerly working in Bartiméus Education (4-20 years, special schools and mainstream) and is now working for ViewPlus, promoting the accessibility, availability and use of tactile diagrams. She has learnt very much from Hoëlle and will assist to present her inspiring philosophy and experience.
