When she was five Sarah had an operation that left her completely blind. Her first request after the operation was for a colouring book and armed with 'smelly felt tips' Sarah began to colour a tactile picture of a butterfly. She also used a wide variety of dot combinations on her Perkin's Brailler to create pictures. Sarah also learnt to draw on plastic film and these pictures provided her with a great deal of personal satisfaction, gained her the respect of other children and inspired other blind children to want to draw.
Despite her lack of sight Sarah's drawing continued to develop and she went on to solve problems, such as perspective for herself. She can now draw successfully on paper and has filled sketchbooks with her work, which she still wants to colour.
