The ability to read tactile maps supports spatial understanding of the child with visual impairment. However, reading a map requires that the child understands the concept of the map and how it shows locations of the objects out of the arm’s reach, and how a three-dimensional model transforms to a two-dimensional tactile map.
This paper introduces the book, which is an educational tool of six map-like assignments called pre-maps. The aim of the book is to instruct tactile maps in a playful way, and to encourage the child to be curious about her/his daily environment. At the same time the book is simple and functional as well as aesthetic tactually. The book can be used by the parents and by the practitioners. It is appropriate for all children; it can be one tool to promote socialization.
