This workshop will look at designing, making and using a wide range of tactile resources to entertain, motivate, and educate visually-impaired children with and without additional learning difficulties. From the use of real objects, through collage books, to increasingly representational illustrations and two-dimensional tactile graphics, the workshop will look at what makes for a successful tactile illustration. This will include an exploration of how visual concepts can be conveyed through a variety of activities, objects and graphics.
Objectives of Workshop:
- To consider the need for tactile resources appropriate to the child’s level of development
- To consider a variety of ways of making such resources
- To explore what makes a successful tactile resource
- To explain some of the issues around interpretation of tactile images
- To suggest activities which facilitate understanding of tactile graphics and visual concepts
Outcomes for Audience:
- Increased enthusiasm for tactile resources for visually-impaired children
- Increased confidence in providing appropriate resources
- Better understanding of the challenges faced by totally blind children interpreting tactile illustrations and tactile graphics
- Knowledge of games and activities facilitating understanding of tactile graphics
- Knowledge of basic principles of designing tactile graphics
