Poster Display Abstract for Tactile Graphics 2008

Title: Presenting the challenge of tactile graphics to mainstream graphics researchers

Author: Frances Aldrich

Abstract:

Research into visual diagrams and other graphics is a well-established field, with contributors from backgrounds as diverse as architecture, artificial intelligence, cartography, cognitive science, computer science, education, graphic design, history of science, human-computer interaction, linguistics, logic, mathematics, philosophy, psychology, and software modelling. Mainstream researchers may well have a useful contribution to make to understanding how meaning can be most effectively represented in tactile graphics.

Previously I have found that researchers into visual graphics are largely unaware of the field of tactile graphics but are interested to learn more about it (Aldrich, 2004). With the intention of ‘cross-fertilising’ the two research fields, I am going to the mainstream graphics conference Diagrams 2008 (5th International Conference on the Theory and Application of Diagrams) to present a poster with the title ‘Talk to the hand: an agenda for further research on tactile graphics’.

At Tactile Graphics 2008 I will display this poster and report the feedback it received from mainstream visual graphics researchers.
