HE Project

Project Overview

The DDA part IV now affects all aspects of education, including admissions, enrolments and exclusions, and student services, including teaching, libraries, catering, accommodation and careers services.

Studies commissioned by the Higher Education Funding Councils have identified lack of staff knowledge as the key barrier to improving provision for disabled students.

The National Centre for Tactile Diagrams (NCTD) has received funding from HEFCE and DELNI, for a project to equip university staff with the knowledge of how to meet the needs of their blind and partially sighted students.

This Strand Two funded project is entitled “Developing Academic Expertise in the provision of Accessible Materials for blind and partially sighted students”.
It enables the NCTD to develop and deliver a range of staff development activities and materials for university staff across England and Northern Ireland, helping them to make their learning and teaching materials accessible to the growing number of blind and partially sighted students entering HE.

The graphical elements of any course can be the hardest materials to convey to blind and partially sighted students, therefore the NCTD provide a range of services and materials to assist academics in presenting graphical information.

Available services and materials are:

These are being disseminated to university staff at all levels through learning and teaching networks, disability networks, and staff development networks.
