Tactile Graphics Pack for HE

The NCTD are conducting a project funded by HEFCE/DELNI to help higher education staff to improve their expertise in supporting blind and partially sighted students.

As part of this project we have sent tactile graphic sample packs to all university disability offices in England and Northern Ireland and to every LTSN centre, giving examples of the types of graphical materials that can be achieved in tactile form. These are valuable aids to all parts of a blind or partially sighted students’ university life.

"An excellent resource to pull off a shelf to demonstrate to staff and students what's possible, and to tell us what we need to do"

How to Use Tactile Graphics (provided in print, braille and on disk)

Tactile graphics are extremely useful as long as they are used properly and carefully. Therefore the NCTD has designed a set of guidelines for using tactile graphics.

Case Studies from blind and partially sighted students using tactile graphics in HE (provided in print and on disk)

In order to realise the value and uses of tactile graphics we have included case studies from blind and partially sighted students from different Higher Education subjects and institutions. These students have discovered the benefits of such resources in their everyday university life, as could your current or future blind and partially sighted students. View some HE case studies.

Verbal Descriptions of the Tactile Graphics (provided in print, braille and on disk)

Verbal descriptions of how to navigate through each tactile graphic are also included as without these, comprehension of the graphic can be difficult. Also these enable blind and sighted individuals to work together.

Tactile Graphics Sample Pack for HE

We have enclosed five sample tactile graphics including a campus map, each from a different higher education subject, ranging in complexity to show what can be achieved in tactile form. Each of these graphics is provided with a Braille and a large print version, to accommodate the requirements of most people with sight problems. (These graphics have been reproduced with the permission of the Open University and Staffordshire University.)

The cost of the pack is £45.00 inclusive of postage packaging and VAT (zero rated). If were not eligible to receive a free pack, or would like to buy additional packs, please contact us to place an order.
