Abstract:

We present research work on a system that allows blind people to edit and inspect coloured, digital raster graphics with a Braille line or a tactile graphics display.

We have developed two textual formats called FigureBraille - one shows the graphic’s structure by using one Braille dot per pixel, the other uses one character per pixel to provide colour information. Both formats are textual representations so that they can be viewed and edited with ordinary text editors. Nevertheless, our editor provides advanced editing and exploring features like colour filters and conversion between FigureBraille and ordinary graphic formats. The system is already used within the HyperBraille project to exchange ideas on the design of GUI representations for a tactile display between blind and sighted users quickly. The conference attendees can test the system on the BrailleDis 9000 in the exhibition area. Future plans are to integrate support for more flexible, object-driven editing.
