Title: Educating young children using tactiles

Abstract:

The goals of the presentation are to describe the need for a developmental approach in the instruction of tactile graphics; identify considerations when designing, constructing, selecting and modifying tactile graphics; and share tactile graphics resources including samples, guidelines, repositories, and software / hardware options with the audience. The presenter will also discuss British Columbia’s provincial initiatives in regard to the production and training in tactile graphics to support school age children.

Objectives of Presentation:
• Provide an understanding of the conceptual progression of a young child when being introduced to tactile graphics
• Provide an awareness of production considerations
• Provide an awareness of PRCVI’s approach to training, good practice and standards and sharing of resources

Outcome for audience:
• Introduction of concepts with young children who are visually impaired with an outcome to utilize tactile graphics effectively
• A tactile graphics online repository of files will be shared
