Abstract for Tactile Graphics 2008

Title: Development of tactile map editing software with embedded symbolization

Reference: P2-C

Presenter: Amy Lobben

University of Oregon, USA

Abstract:

This paper presents newly developed, freely downloadable tactile mapping software. The software is designed with drag-and-drop tactile navigation map symbols for use on microcapsule paper. The symbol set was developed through surveys and user consultation and was subsequently field tested for discriminability, usability, and symbol use patterns. Overall, this field testing research has identified not only discriminability thresholds, but has also identified map use and behavioural patterns between tactile navigation map users. The paper will present the results from this two-year map use research. In addition, we will provide an orientation and brief tutorial for the newly-developed tactile mapping software, including download location and instructions.
