There are many graphics of animals and plants in biology text books, therefore careful attention is necessary when modifying textbooks in Braille, and also when visually impaired (VI) pupils are using these graphics.
However, the importance of observing real animals and plants should always be reminded in science. Especially since the VI students often lack experience of observing animals and plants.
Yet, there are objects that are too small to be observed by touch, or too big for the VI student to understand the whole figure. Also, if the object is too soft, its shape will not be understood by touch. In these cases, using models and tactile graphics along with the real object will increase the understanding of VI students. This presentation will discuss the fundamental ideas on how we can use them effectively.
