KERHO design is a group of three young Finnish designers; Milla Ahti, Helka Karjalainen and Everiina Rosberg. The group’s aim is to design products that enhance the accessibility and suitability of the built environment for all. KERHO design focuses on aesthetic accessibility.
KERHO design has designed two ceramic tactile guides for the visually impaired. The first guide was made in 2005 for the Kamppi Centre in Helsinki. The project was commissioned by Juhani Pallasmaa Architects.
Inspired by the tactile guide of Kamppi Centre, another tactile guide was made for the Louhisaari Manor in summer 2006. The project was made in cooperation with The Finnish National Board of Antiquities and the Visually Impaired of Western Finland. The project was a part of the National Board of Antiquities’ EU-financed ACCU project – Access to Cultural Heritage.
At the moment KERHO design is doing research on ceramic tactile models with a grant received from the Finnish Cultural Foundation. Results from the research and small scale models from previous projects will be presented in Tactile Graphics 2008.
