Abstract:

Through an 8-year joint project of Braille Authority of North America and Canadian Braille Authority, Guidelines and Standards for Tactile Graphics has been developed. The background, instructions, and standards included in the proposed code are intended for use by braille transcribers, teachers of students who are blind or visually impaired, braille textbook producers and braille publishing houses. The proposed document and its 2-volume supplement of tactile graphics examples will be available for conference participants to peruse. The Guidelines and Standards document is currently in peer review by experts in the US, Canada, UK and New Zealand. Comments and recommendations from peer reviewers will be considered and incorporated, then submitted for the approval of both braille authorities. The adopted (official) code for tactile graphics will be published in 2009.
