Abstract:

This presentation will outline a sequence for presenting concepts to facilitate the development of graphic literacy in new braille readers. As a braille reader learns to read, they are carefully taught to recognize the symbols for letters, numbers, sounds, sound blends, and punctuation. When the reader encounters symbols that represent concrete objects (things to count or group, location of furniture in the classroom) or abstract concepts (countries, cities, oil wells, parts of the heart), they have no frame of reference from which to decode the symbols. A systematic presentation of sequential instruction and related activities is an important component in the development of graphic literacy. Through reviews of learning theory, research in braille literacy, recognition of best practices in braille instruction, and consultation with teachers of students who are blind/visually impaired, the program is developed to parallel proven strategies in braille reading instruction. Some available resources and materials for instruction will be highlighted.
