
The speaker will present results of ongoing work on methods for producing accessible interactive museum exhibits. These are displays that allow museum visitors to touch three-dimensional metal models, and then listen to recorded human speech that identifies parts of the models as they are touched. This work has led to the creation of a prototype system, currently installed at New York Hall of Science, that focuses on a pair of actual space ships that are currently not accessible to visually impaired visitors. In addition to audio-tactile interactivity, the exhibit also provides Universally-designed content that deals with the history of space exploration. The presentation will include a demonstration of the system, along with a discussion of the technical specifications of the electronic device that enables touch-sensitivity in specially-prepared metal models.
