My meeting in 1988 with a team of teachers from the National Centre for teachers of children with special needs in France allowed me to make my way in applied research in tactile pictures both at ergonomic and semiological levels:
Additional technical research has led to inclusive museologocial realisations and the edition of tactile books on popular themes in the fields of science, architecture and history of art.
But these applications should not let us forget that the benefit of using them is directly dependent on the skills that the reader has been able to develop for accessing the contents of the proposed information. This clearly poses the question of the cognitive autonomy of the visitor and reader. It is on the basis of these considerations that the workshops of tactile reading proposed by the Cité des Sciences, the museum of the Louvres and the CNEFI were designed. They are organised in the form of a training cycle – three sessions are currently proposed. Before anything else, those workshops are pretext to a cultural, historical and scientific travel through representation systems that are in use in the fields of architecture and art. A progression is set up through each session, to build up spatial and iconic skills relative to the coding of the proposed representations in the fields that are touched upon.
