Abstract:

Haptic stimulation is crucial for children with visual impairments in early developmental years. Tactile perception allows them to discover the world around them, while setting a foundation for Braille learning. The objective of this work was to develop a storybook for blind and visually impaired children, to provide tactile stimulation and educational content in a motivating and enjoyable way through tactile graphics.

Using tactile/high-contrast colour illustrations, the storybook encourages the child to follow the story, while developing tactile sensitivity. In addition, the content of the book depicts the basic concepts of spatial orientation that will become the basis for Braille learning: up, down, middle, left and right. To reinforce the communication of these concepts and improve the tactile interface, a grid was established for the layout of the illustrations. The recognition of the tactile graphics was also addressed, using different levels of height. The book was informally tried in a small class of pre-school children, resulting in a positive reaction. Further testing is necessary to establish possible educational outcomes, as well as areas for improvement for future production.
