Abstract for Tactile Graphics 2005
Title:
Designing tactile interpretations with access for all
Presenter: Loz Simpson

Topografik, UK
Abstract:
Please touch.
This simple statement captures the essence of this presentation which will demonstrate how "access for all" tactile interpretations can be successfully integrated into museums, art galleries and heritage sites.
The presentation will review a series of projects completed since 2002: seven tactile installations at the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne, a 1:25 scale model of Kew Palace commissioned by Historic Royal Palaces, an interactive 1:75 scale model of Staircase House commissioned by Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council; and a bronze landscape of Mount Everest with a touch-sensitive companion tactile piece giving audio orientation. These projects have provided an experience of touch for everyone and created practical educational resources suitable for a wide range of age groups and abilities.
The focus will be on:
- how an experimental but sensitive approach is important in achieving a diverse range of tactile experiences specific to the function, space or object targeted for interpretation;
- the challenges involved when seeking to encompass a range of equally important aims;
- the design implications of "access for all" that have guided each project, with particular emphasis on visually impaired people (a diverse group) as the core design principle;
- the need to choose appropriate materials that are robust, safe to handle, easily maintained and visually compatible within their environment;
- the importance of being aware of the experiences and comments of sighted and non-sighted visitors/groups at each phase of the projects;
- the role of evaluation in shaping and informing future work.
Objectives of presentation:
- To reinforce the concept of “access for all”.
- To share experiences which have developed through a close working relationship with RNIB.
- To highlight the importance of consensus in fostering a successful design.
- To emphasise the importance of openness to new ideas, new materials and new possibilities.
Outcomes for audience:
- An insight into some of the tactile work currently on display and in progress in the UK.
- Ideas and possibilities for the audience to take with them for current or future projects.
