The Japanese Standards Association is presently forming several exploratory committees regarding standardization of accessible design based on ISO/IEC Guide 71 that provides guidance about the needs of older persons and persons with disabilities. Among those actions managed by the Japanese government, we examine the standard in a 3-year project committee entitled "Standardization of Display Method for Tactile Guide Maps for Buildings, Stations and Other Public Facilities." As the "Transport Accessibility Improvement Law" was recently enacted in Japan, many Braille signs and tactile guide maps have been installed at various buildings, stations and other public facilities. It is stated that at least 500 tactile guide maps are installed every year. Therefore, the tactile guide map has become popular in Japan. However, many companies who do not have enough knowledge about Braille signs and tactile guide maps can also enter this field easily, so many incorrect products have appeared around us. These products may cause misunderstanding for a user not only they are useless. In this presentation, we will introduce the process for achieving standardization of our display method for tactile guide maps in our committee. Our work is for domestic standard in the present, but may have international applicability. We would like participants in this conference to feel free to raise any questions and/or comments about our study.
