Abstract:

This presentation deals with the results of several years of research and practical tests on the automated production of tactile maps with the emphasis on exploiting of an existing spatial data base. The aims of the tests were the following: to develop an automated procedure for the production of tactile maps, to choose the optimal content and to produce a quality editing works, to reduce the time of production and improve its quality, to elaborate an automated multi-purpose data base, to simplify the production and editing processes, to introduce standardised tactile symbols, to make use of the existing national and private digital spatial data bases for tactile map production and orientation, to develop a procedure for mass printing of colours on mobile maps and to use the most contemporary computer and related equipment. The aim was fully achieved, so the blind in Slovenia now have various mobile maps at their disposal, produced in an automated way.
