This presentation describes the tactile model and map creation and summarises experience with method usage of these orientation aids. For developing the space concept of the Prague school for blind students we started 13 years ago a tactile aids project with following main goals: (1) to create appropriate tactile aids for creation of basic concept about surroundings of primary school for the blind in Prague, including a 3D tactile model and a 2D tactile orientation map, both of the surroundings of the school; (2) to find appropriate methods to explain to visually impaired students (particularly blind students) the relation between real objects in space and their depiction in a map.
The basic thesis for the solution of this problem is a methodical row/sequence: first a model; then a tactile map of the same scale; then a simplified tactile map of less scale (all made for the same territory).
The first part of the presentation is focused on methods of geometrical modification of positional drawing for the 3D and 2D aids. The next part summarises concrete practical methods of the tactile aids usage: improving the tactual perception, basic of the maps symbols, space concept foundation, systematic usage of the aids during the O&M education. The final educational activity - planning of the route with the help of the tactile model and realisation in reality - is presented on video. A main goal of this activity is to help the visually impaired to obtain the right space concept of the whole place of living.
