Abstract:

Simple tactile books are invaluable in introducing new concepts, new vocabulary and new skills to young children with little or no sight. They can play a similar role for older children, teenagers and adults with learning difficulties. Tactile books are also a lot of fun!

This workshop will consider what makes a tactile illustration hard or easy to interpret, with opportunities to examine a variety of illustrations by touch only. You do not need to be artistic or to have craft skills to make a very enjoyable tactile book. This workshop will present ideas and methods to enable everyone to produce delightful and much-needed books.

Objectives of Workshop:

  • To consider the need for tactile books
  • To explore what makes a successful book
  • To look at ways of making books
  • To introduce the idea of tactile books for all ages

Outcomes for Audience:

  • Increased confidence in the designing tactile books
  • Increased confidence in making tactile books
  • Increased enthusiasm for tactile books
