We demonstrate a novel tactile device consisting of 8192 equally spaced tactile pins, arranged in 128 by 64 matrix. The unit is capable of displaying graphic and/or text. The unit can display 13 lines of 43 Braille characters (4 by 2). The refresh rate is under 7 seconds for the entire display area. Touch sensitive feedback to detect the position of the user’s finger is a standard feature. Thus users can click on the screen to navigate hyper-links or route cursor. The unit is connected to a computer via a USB interface. The unit is powered by internal rechargeable power source or external power supply. The display unit is supplied in an attractive leather enclosure. The unit’s dimensions are 450 x 300 x 60 mm and approximate weight is 5.5 kgms. The unit is based on Smart electro rhealogical fluid technology and was conceived by a consortium of European research partners. The consortium is led by Smart Technology, with active participation from RNIB Vocational College Loughborough. The research programme was funded by the EC Information Society Technologies 5th Framework Programme (2001-2005).
