Abstract:

Meaningful contact with tactile graphics requires good understanding of the conventions used in two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional objects and of other concepts related to spatial relations and visual experience. Explaining these problems is one of the most difficult areas in the education of children born blind. Hungry Fingers educational tools are all designed to help parents and teachers engage children in interesting activities which facilitate understanding of such difficult concepts as the relation between objects and drawing, perspective, symmetry or rotation and many more. The HUNGRY FINGERS tools shown in the exhibition and the accompanying tactile illustrations were designed by the presenter to give young totally blind learners a solid foundation on which they can build their confidence with more complex tactile graphics.
