Pocket calculators with graphical displays are becoming more and more standard equipment in classrooms and lecture-halls. This opens new possibilities in teaching mathematics and science. The fast availability of mathematical graphics leads to a better understanding of mathematical issues for regular students. For blind students, there is a need for a device, which offers similar possibilities.
The Tamagraph system was developed for this needs: It is a PC-based solution consisting of the math program Maple, a software program called Plotexplorer and a fast tactile graphic display. Plotexplorer is the bridge between Maple and the tactile display. With a short command, a blind student is able to redirect Maple's graphical output to the tactile display. The values of co-ordinates are shown on a Braille display. The Mathematical curves and geometric shapes could be shown on the tactile display. It is possible to enlarge sectors and to move the enlarged sector along the curves or geometric shapes.
