Abstract:

The exhibition comprises photographs, designs, project notes, evaluations and examples of completed work. The projects included are: seven installations commissioned by the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle; ‘Kew Palace’, commissioned by Historic Royal Palaces, ‘Staircase House’ commissioned by Stockport Metropolitan Council; ‘The White Tower at Tower of London’, commissioned by Royal Armouries and ‘Everest for All’, a finalist in the inaugural Blind Art Exhibition this year.

Kew Palace and ‘Everest for All’ are available to touch. Kew Palace is a 1:25 scale model of the Royal house constructed in beech and beech veneer. ‘Everest for All’ is a 1:25000 scale bronze landscape showing the Himalayas centred on Everest. It has a companion orientation piece cast in clear resin, which gives an audio response when key points of the landscape are touched. Photographs and drawings illustrate stages of the design process through to finishing and installation. Project notes, evaluations and examples of public comment highlight core design principles and confirm the broad appeal of ‘access for all’ tactile installations.
