Abstract:

We design and manufacture tactile sandblasted timber signs. They are used mainly in external applications – parks, nature reserves etc. A great deal of detail can be presented through the medium of sandblasted timber including maps, illustrations, diagrams and text. A further major benefit is that the finished product can be enjoyed by partially and fully sighted alike.

A typical project was undertaken for Craig-Y-Nos Country Park in the Brecon Beacons where a sandblasted, tactile map was included in their upgraded welcome and entrance area structure. The map was initially designed by Fieldsman Trails of Mold and showed the habitats of the Country Park, with native flora and fauna species decorating the borders. Shelleys took on the final design and production of the map, using sandblasted timber to create a fully tactile feature.

Consultation with local access groups, Fieldfare Trust and the RNIB/GDBA Joint Mobility Unit all yielded vital design and practical information. The Country Park maintained editorial control based on site knowledge, while Shelleys offered practical advice on the viability of all suggestions. Raised lines and symbols show different habitats, buildings and features of the Country Park.
