This paper reports the findings of an international survey of tactile map producers, designers and researchers. It presents a review of the results of statistical analysis about production methods, techniques, outputs and design preferences worldwide. Addressing the use of tactile symbols it searches for shared experiences, consistent approaches and common threads where they exist. Unfortunately it emphasizes much more the isolated context within which most people involved in tactile map design work. It thus draws upon the personal opinions of the survey respondents to construct an argument for improved collaboration in the field.
