Abstract for the International Conference on Tactile Diagrams Maps and Pictures 2002

Making Tactile Books for Young VI Children (workshop)

Marion Ripley and Robin Nation

ClearVision Project, UK; Royal New Zealand Foundation for the Blind, New Zealand

Tactile books are invaluable for young visually-impaired children. As well as being a lot of fun, they help to develop tactile skills, vocabulary, and spatial awareness. They can also be used for numerous early learning topics. This workshop will provide an opportunity to discuss ideas for books, sources of materials, production methods and health and safety issues. There will also be an opportunity for some 'hands-on' exploration of tactile materials and the chance to design your own book.
