There are many factors that contribute to a blind person's successful use of
tactile diagrams. The research described in this presentation examined three
such factors, namely blind people's ability to perceive, understand and apply
the information contained in tactile diagrams. The experimental methods used
in investigating these abilities will be outlined and the results of this research
will be presented in terms of their impact on effective tactile diagram design.
