Abstract for the International Conference on Tactile Diagrams Maps and Pictures 2002

Real World Tactile Map Reading Strategies

Chris Perkins and Ann Gardiner

University of Manchester, UK

Successful use of tactile maps and diagrams depends upon knowing how to read the raised image, but very little research has been carried out yet to explore differing reading strategies. This paper reports on observational research investigating how users of tactile maps in country parks, how visually impaired children and how visually impaired golfers actually read tactile maps. It focuses upon the links between different ways of reading the map and the different kinds of map use and interpretation that follow on from the reading process. The study concludes by discussing similarities and differences from sighted map skill acquisition and the implications of results for mobility, education, training, and map design.
