The aim of the presentation is to clarify the copyright situation as it affects visually impaired people, non-profit bodies and voluntary groups producing copyright material in accessible formats, in light of the recent EU Directive on Copyright and the forthcoming UK Copyright Bill.
It will examine four main areas:
1. A brief overview of the current situation in the UK and the rest of the
world.
2. The background to the UK Copyright Bill.
3. The Copyright Bill and what it means in practice, with particular reference
to tactile diagrams, maps and pictures.
4. What still needs to be done: the global library.
As Copyright Officer at RNIB, the presenter is responsible for copyright clearance and advises other non-profit bodies on copyright issues. The last few years have been spent working with rights holders' representatives to try to encourage a more liberal approach to copyright, and assisting in the creation of the Joint Industry Guidelines on Copyright and the Publishers Brochure. Responsibilities also include supporting the UK and World Blind Union Copyright Campaign team, and assisting in the drafting of the UK Copyright Bill.
