This session will discuss work in progress on two projects aiming to make visual art from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection accessible to people with little or no sight. It will describe the context and philosophy on which these projects are based, and explore the potential functions of tactile graphics in art and museum education.
One initiative involves tactile pictures of works of art designed to accompany
tactile and non-tactile gallery tours. The second, a tactile alphabet book featuring
works of art from the Metropolitan, will provide an inclusive family experience
and an opportunity to learn about art while teaching visually impaired children
the braille alphabet, the raised letter alphabet, and techniques for exploring
and understanding tactile pictures.
