An important problem for the usefulness of tactile maps is the long exploration times usually needed, a common exploratory procedure being contour following. The aim was to study if the efficiency in reading can be increased by exploration being performed with two fingers following simultaneously along opposite sides of a picture. In an experiment where the task was to identify European countries appearing on separate maps, there were significant improvements over sessions, but no significant differences to a one-finger condition were found. Theoretical and practical aspects of the use of several fingers in exploration of tactile maps will be discussed.
