Abstract for the International Conference on Tactile Diagrams
Maps and Pictures 2002
Tactile Art as an Aid to Education and Orientation
in School Grounds
Adrian Farnsworth & Peter Lumley
Markeaton Primary School, UK
Markeaton Primary School is
located in Derby City and draws on children from a varied catchment area, including
children with a significant sight impairment. Over the last twelve years we have
made a concerted effort to make the grounds as interesting, accessible and enjoyable
for blind and partially sighted children as they are for sighted children.
The projects, which have included professional artists working with the children,
have included tactile murals, a totem pole, tactile walls, large carved sections
of two felled beech trees, carved tables, large carved panels and a sensory garden.
