Abstract for the International Conference on Tactile Diagrams Maps and Pictures 2002

What skills & knowledge do tactile graphics users need?

Frances Aldrich & Yvonne Hindle

University of Sussex, UK

A great deal of thought goes into the design of many tactile graphics. In contrast little attention is given to the skills and knowledge which users must possess to interpret the graphics and it is this which is the focus of our research. In this paper
we describe a conceptual framework (or 'model') we are currently developing to describe how blind schoolchildren comprehend tactile graphics. Our model suggests that four factors are involved - perceptual processing, cognitive skills, knowledge and cognitive development We will briefly outline each in turn and highlight some of the issues for discussion emerging from our work.
(A workshop later will provide an opportunity for more in-depth discussion.)
